Mindfulness will be promoted daily through yoga and meditation. Studies have found that children who practice mindfulness tend to experience less anxiety and stress. Negative emotions are decreased while positive, neutral thinking increases. There is also extensive evidence demonstrating the benefits of mindfulness in academic engagement and focus.
A key focus of this project is to have student work in the kitchen on a regular basis. During these sessions we will discuss food choices and how they affect our bodies physically, mentally and emotionally. Students will be encouraged to make healthy food choices by reading labels and preparing their own meals. Our goal is to raise awareness of a healthy lifestyle.
Students will be presented with a variety of projects through out the year often covering several subjects at a time such as math, reading, history and science. Students will take a hands on approach to complete each project and demonstrate their understanding.
Durning our summer camps students will work on one project for the week.
Via problem based learning students will be presented with social and environmental issues to which they need to find the best solutions for all parties involved. In most of these projects students will need to work as a group and decide what is the best action to take in order to tackle problems faced by various communities in the past and present.
Students will receive help with any subject during our tutoring time. Parents need to provide some type of curriculum every time the student attends. We encourage parents to use an online curriculum, but workbooks/worksheets are also welcome.
Students will be encouraged to meet and interview entrepreneurs, business owners and people in local government office to understand how our community works. Also through volunteering, they will have the opportunity to participate directly in current community needs.
Students will be encouraged to read and journal everyday in half our sessions. They will be encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences with others using positive communication skills.
In this basic math skills class, learners will explore in-depth how to work with percentages, fractions, measurements and more. This course will be geared towards students of ages 8-14. Students will work with manipulatives, real world problems, and games to better understand these skills. The purpose of this class is to set a strong foundation of math skills that will later be used in all math classes.
